Why Bill Foster and Chris Talmadge Created the Company

A Better Answer to the Mistakes Homeowners Keep Inheriting

Salt & Timber grew from years spent seeing both the visible results and the hidden consequences of residential renovation choices.

Bill Foster has been doing home renovations and house flipping for more than ten years. That work showed him how often homeowners inherit the cost of rushed preparation, unclear scopes, poor transitions, and decisions made without explaining the tradeoffs.

Bill and his business partner, Chris Talmadge, created Salt & Timber Home Services together to offer a better experience. They built the company around transparency, communication, and trustworthiness, with a simple operating idea: the people you talk to are the people who do and coordinate the work.

The company is military owned, based in Keyport, and serves homes within a 50-mile radius. Its service model keeps the conversation close to the people responsible for the work.

Company Values

What the Salt & Timber Approach Means During Residential Work

The business was built around direct conversation, clear expectations, and practical judgment.

The Working Team Answers

Homeowners speak directly with the people responsible for doing and coordinating the work.

Communication Stays Active

Questions, site findings, and connected decisions are discussed rather than hidden in a handoff.

Trust Has to Be Earned

The company states trustworthiness as a core goal, not a substitute for a clear project scope.

Military Ownership

A service-minded sense of accountability supports the company’s direct approach to residential work.

Experience Applied Carefully

Renovation Knowledge Applied to Every Property

Experience can inform judgment while every property still receives its own review.

More than ten years around renovation and house flipping builds pattern recognition: where finish work commonly fails, where water may travel, how one opening affects several connected trades, and why quick cosmetic fixes can create larger repair work later.

Salt & Timber uses that perspective to ask better questions and keep conditions visible. Municipal approvals, specialist work, and a property-specific scope remain important parts of responsible planning.

How the Values Show Up

Four Ways Salt & Timber Keeps the Homeowner in the Project

  1. Listen Before Recommending

The conversation begins with the home, current problem, and owner's priorities.

  2. Show Connected Conditions

Visible issues and related work are discussed before new finishes hide them.

  3. Keep Decisions Direct

The working team remains part of scope and site conversations.

  4. Close With a Walkthrough

The defined work is reviewed with the homeowner at completion.
